Well for starters I would stop going for MRI's. I do not know anything about you like your age, your weight, your medical history, but since this is the second time you have injured this area it is probably safe to assume that you have scar tissue in the area from these accidents which is still causing some of your pain.

2 years ago, I sought the advice of my GP with regard to a pain in my right ankle which had been bothering me for several months. He referred me to an orthopedist. I underwent several tests, x-rays, blood work, mri, and a bone scan. It was determined that I have bone cysts in my ankle joint. My blood work didn't reveal any arthritis, and I don't have pain in my other joints. What actually can be the problem with my ankle?
Quite possibly the MRI is not giving an accurate reading on the prognosis of the fracture. In that case a bone scan might be indicated. My philosophy is that any time the patient's progress does not match the lab work or radiology findings, then more investigation needs to be done.

Secondly, a fusion also puts excessive pressure on the foot joints, so after 20 years it is not surprising that you are developing these pains. Read on to view more details on ankle fusion.

There is a possibility that if you stop wearing shoes that aggravate the bone and wear a more conservative shoe, that over a period of weeks to a few months the pain may subside or even disappear. When there is a bony abnormality on a foot I often tell the patient that trying to wear a dressy shoe on that type of foot is the equivalent of trying to put a square peg into a round hole.
